More exhibitors, more space, more world premieres, more visitors

At the 67th IAA Commercial Vehicles held from September 20 to 27, 2018, almost 2,200 exhibitors from 48 countries presented their latest developments on the trade fair grounds in Hannover. During the entire IAA visitors experienced a sector in a state of anticipation, which is going on the offensive to face the current challenges.

The number of visitors was slightly up on the already very good result from 2016, climbing to around 250,000. The exhibition space set a new IAA record of 282,000 square meters. The exhibitors presented 435 world premieres – also a new record and a disproportionately large rise of 31 percent. This confirmed the IAA’s standing as the world’s largest and most important trade show for mobility, transport and logistics – which was also underlined by the proportion of foreign exhibitors of 60 percent.

The slogan “Driving Tomorrow” refers to aspects not just presented at the trade show, but also demonstrated live in a wide range of different formats and which were available for visitors to experience hands-on and try driving for themselves.

For the first time the New Mobility World FORUM offered a curated, four-day conference program on the topics of Connected Vehicle, Automated Driving, Alternative Powertrain, Urban Logistics and Transport Services, with 20 meetings and over 100 international speakers. On the New Mobility World LIVE outdoor site, there were daily driving demonstrations including a completely autonomous semi-trailer combination and a last-mile delivery situation in which the van deposits the driver and continues autonomously to the location of the next delivery. There was also a long truck whose agility was demonstrated, plus the correct way to form a lane for emergency vehicles. In all 29 companies offered visitors test drives in a total of 35 e-vehicles and 39 conventionally powered vehicles.


The number of IAA visitors showed another small rise in 2018 and came to almost 250,000. The proportion of trade visitors was 86 percent, with 31 percent of them coming from countries other than Germany.

Furthermore, 43 percent of the trade visitors have senior positions in their companies, and 71 percent are involved in corporate purchasing and procurements decisions.


The IAA 2018 drew the whole commercial-vehicle value chain together. The largest group of exhibitors was the suppliers with 46 percent and occupying 24 percent of the exhibition space, followed by the manufacturers of trailers, bodies and containers accounting for 16 percent of exhibitors and 23 percent of the exhibition space.

The makers of buses were also well represented again in 2018. The amount of exhibition space was 35 percentage points greater than in 2016.

The IAA 2018 lived up to its aim of being an international show: 60 percent of the exhibitors came from abroad and occupied 43 percent of the exhibition space. The number of exhibiting countries was 48. The three foreign countries sending the most exhibitors were China (in first place), Italy and the Netherlands.
