AVL Creators Expedition

Aug 29, 2019

In conversation with Sebastian Jagsch, head of the AVL CREATORS EXPEDITION, where the focus is on early and growth stage auto tech startups in the areas of Electric Mobility, Autonomous Driving as well as Data Driven Innovation & Artificial Intelligence.

AVL covers industries ranging from 2-wheelers to tractors to racing cars. How do the services differ?

The different sizes of the vehicle as well as the specifics of the powertrain integration affect the whole propulsion system. The specific needs of the industries require an adaption of all elements of the powertrain. AVL, as the world’s largest independent company for developing, simulation and testing technology of powertrain systems, provides invaluable support. Wherever powertrains are developed and there is a lack of own resources or know-how, AVL offers tailor-made consulting and development services, simulation tools and test systems to enable our customers achieve their visions. With our flexible engineering solutions, we are able to meet different customers’ needs.

When looking at electrification, we are seeing great strides made with powertrains and within the entire automotive industry as it’s not just the engine that needs to be electrified. Where are the differences when working on the electrification of the passenger car to the electrification of large vehicles such as busses?

The commercial vehicle industry is under considerable pressure to further reduce emissions and comply with strict CO2 legislation in the future. The increased demand for electrified powertrains for trucks and buses must be satisfied with products that provide cost effectiveness and that requires optimization of costs, efficiency, range and weight to heavy-duty, long-haul or inner-city, as well as passenger or freight transport - also have a wide variety of needs that cannot be solved with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

Therefore, its extensive system and component know-how as well as state-of-the-art development and validation methods enable AVL to offer also tailor-made electrification solutions for large vehicles that can be quickly implemented in series production.

As powertrain experts, where do you see these developments going? What is the next frontier?

AVL provides solutions for all types of powertrains (ICE, BEV, FCEV) depending on the application and the customer needs. We see that all three types are important, depending on the application.

Moving on to autonomous driving, AVL is focusing on new tasks that involve subjective human sensations such as driveability, connectivity and ADAS. Can you tell us more about AVL’s autonomous driving projects?

The automotive industry is already seeing the widespread adoption of level 2 and 3 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include features such as Lane Keeping Assist, Braking Assist, Adaptive Control and Parking Assist. With the transition from assisted driving to fully autonomous driving on the horizon, OEMs need to be prepared for ADAS levels 3 and beyond.

Fortunately, AVL is a trusted partner for OEMs looking to embrace this functionality. With our comprehensive engineering, simulation and testing expertise, we can customize our services to meet your specific needs.

We cover everything from system design to tailored control and software development, as well as calibration, testing and validation. Our portfolio of tools is designed to help you realize your AD and ADAS vision. Let us guide you to the future.

AVL provided one of this year’s NMW Lab19 challenges. What is the importance for established companies such as yourselves to engage with young and upcoming talent founding startups?

We strongly believe that the key to success in the future is collaboration. AVL has a long history of co-innovation with our customers, with universities and with startups too. One of our company values is our pionieering spirit and so has entrepreneurship always been an important factor for our evolution.

With our program Creators Expedition, that we started 2 years ago, we streamline our startup touchpoints worldwide and provide a straight-forward approach for joint initial projects between a startup and one of our business units. The rational behind is that with a simple and agile method the pros of both worlds can be combined.

It is kind of obvious to work with NMW as Europe’s leading platform for mobility and we are excited to see how startups tackle the challenges and are expecting great battle in Frankfurt!

About AVL

AVL is the world's largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing of powertrain systems (hybrid, combustion engine, transmission, electric drive, batteries, fuel cell and control technology) for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, construction, large engines and their integration into the vehicle.

The company has decades of experience in the development and optimization of powertrain systems for all industries. As a global technology leader, AVL provides complete and integrated development environments, measurement and test systems as well as state-of-the-art simulation methods.

As a pioneer in the field of innovative solutions, such as diverse electrification strategies for powertrains, AVL is increasingly taking on new tasks in the field of autonomous driving (connectivity, ADAS, CCAD, etc.) especially on the basis of subjective human sensations (driveability, performance attributes, etc.). In the competition of technologies – internal combustion engine, battery/electric drive and fuel cell systems – and their combinations, AVL is working intensively and with the same priorities.

AVL has digitized the vehicle development process with state-of-theart and highly scalable IT, software and technology platforms, and creates new customer solutions in the areas of big data, artificial intelligence, simulation and embedded systems in an agile and integrated development environment.
