The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is giving the IAA 2019 a new look and feel. “The IAA is undergoing a transformation, just like the sector itself,” says VDA President Bernhard Mattes. “Automotive companies will meet new digital players. The IAA is becoming more interactive, more connected, and more digital. Trends and topics will be presented and discussed by representatives from many sectors.”
The new IAA program has four formats: Conference, Experience, Exhibition and Career. The IAA Conference comprises a series of high-level events on four stages. IAA Exhibition is the name of the classical exhibition that showcases the entire value chain. IAA Experience brings experiences to the trade show grounds, for example with an outdoor circuit, intensified test drives and a Kids’ World. IAA Career is designed for students, those starting their career entrants and professionals. “We are creating new offerings and greatly expanding the nature of the IAA as an event – both for exhibitors and for visitors. Our aim is to make mobility something to be experienced with all the senses at the IAA, like nowhere else: seeing, feeling, experiencing and hearing about mobility,” Mattes explains. “We are also developing the New Mobility World (NMW 19). The NMW has earned the IAA a worldwide reputation as an international platform for innovative mobility solutions.”
Attention will focus on the five core topics of automation, connectivity, clean and sustainable mobility, urban mobility and mobility-as-a-service. The conference stages and the exhibitors’ area will be the venues for debates and discussions of topics such as artificial intelligence, user interfaces and infotainment systems, alternative powertrains, solutions for climate change and air quality, smart cities and the sharing economy.
“A lot of what we saw as the mobility of the future when the New Mobility World was launched in 2015 is now reality. Ride-pooling and ride-sharing are everyday practice in cities around the world, the first autonomous shared taxis are already on the roads, and in many places the modern urban infrastructure long ago became connected and intelligent,” says VDA Managing Director Dr. Martin Koers. “In the light of this rapid innovation, the IAA is a place for meetings, stage shows, discussions and demonstrations for all those who want to shape future mobility and set benchmarks.”
One core part of the program is the IAA Conference with a total of four stages. From September 11 to 15, 2019, it will host various debating formats involving numerous decision-makers and experts from the world of mobility. The IAA Conference will be the venue not only for representatives from the automotive industry to demonstrate future prospects, but above all for IT, technology and mobility companies. In recent years guests have included German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Qualcomm’s CEO Steve Mollenkopf. This year there will be future Daimler CEO Ola Kälenius, IBM CEO Virginia Rometty, Microsoft Cloud Executive Vice President Scott Guthrie and other key players in the future of mobility.
As in previous years, the EXPO at the NMW will be an exhibition and demonstration area. There will be appearances by Samsung, IBM, innogy, OSR Enterprise, Vodafone, Paragon, Siemens, DLR and many other firms. At the EXPO exhibitors can design their own space, or alternatively take part in a suitable theme park to generate contacts with visitors and other participants.
Mattes commented: “We are looking forward to welcoming many participants from the technology and IT industries, and numerous startup firms. The fact that all of these companies are using the IAA as a platform illustrates the huge attraction of the event – particularly for new players.” In the Startup Zone there will be ambitious startups making presentations to potential investors and partners from the industry. Furthermore, the NMW will work with “Women in Mobility” to encourage more female managers from the world of mobility to participate.
This year’s event has a new section called IAA Career, which is being implemented together with Young Targets as an experienced realization partner in the field of recruiting. This networking format enables high potentials, qualified individuals, trade visitors and exhibitors to forge contacts, enter into dialog and make applications. IAA Career will take place simultaneously with the IAA Conference, from Thursday to Sunday, at the beginning of the IAA.
