Velodyne Lidar Helps Autonomous Vehicles See and Speak

04.09.2019

US company supports communication between vehicles through visualization and presents new lidar sensors at the IAA 2019

The completely self-driving car is no longer be a vision of the future. Today, around the world, fleets of fully autonomous shuttles are being deployed on city streets. Velodyne Lidar supplies key components for autonomous vehicles (AV); the Silicon Valley-based company is a leading supplier of high-resolution lidar sensors. To ensure safe navigation, the information collected from AVs must be exchanged between those vehicles. Velodyne Lidar sets up a demonstration at the IAA 2019 to showcase how Car2Car communication actually works.

Velodyne Lidar supplies products that are an essential component for the next generation of autonomously controlled vehicles: lidar sensors. Lidar sensors provide the vision required for safe navigation, but fully autonomous vehicle needs more than just eyes. Cars have to communicate with the traffic infrastructure and other road users to exchange information.

At the IAA 2019, Velodyne Lidar lets its guests look through the eyes of an autonomous vehicle, showcasing how the vehicle receives images from the environment through the sensors’ point clouds. In addition, the booth’s visitors can follow how the live sensor information is exchanged with another vehicle. The showcase was developed in cooperation with the US technology company Rajant.

World and European premiere at the Velodyne Lidar booth

In addition to the showcase, the US company will present its complete range of modern lidar sensors at the IAA 2019. The Velarray boasts a compact form for seamless integration within a vehicle’s body or behind the windshield, producing a robust directional image, day or night. Its best-in-class range and resolution allow for faster object identification and longer braking distance at highway speeds. The Velarray detects areas with a horizontal angle of 120 degrees, a vertical angle of 35 degrees and a range of 200 meters. With its modern automotive design, this sensors is made for both fully autonomous driving as well as advanced driver assistance systems.

The Puck 32MR, based on Velodyne Lidar's patented surround-view perception, celebrates its world premiere at the IAA. With a range of 120 meters and a vertical field of view of 40 degrees, it enables navigation in unfamiliar and dynamic situations. Generating a high-resolution point cloud with minimal noise in all light conditions, the Puck 32MR accurately detects crosswalks, curbs, vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles and obstacles for safe and efficient operation in roadway, commercial and industrial use cases. Along with outstanding perception performance, this sensor delivers reliability and durability in a compact form factor.

Velodyne Lidar will also be showing the VelaDome for the first time in Europe – a breakthrough sensor for autonomous vehicles characterized by its state-of-the-art hemispherical field of view. The VelaDome has a compact design, ideal for flawless installation in vehicle bodies. With an industry-leading 180° x 180° FoV and the ability to detect objects as close as 0.1 m, the VelaDome enables the immediate detection of objects- a true close-range safety sensor.
